Hi dear colleagues!

Is there a certification that makes me a specialised business/finance/economics interpreter? I live in London so preferably here, but maybe you know about something in Europe or even outside it? As far as I know the DPSI certificate does not cover that topic.

Thank you in advance!

Westminster's EMCI (at £6500) + a year at the London School of Economics/LBS (hefty price tag).

Several interpreting courses Oct 12, 2008

You're correct in that the DPSI courses do not deal with anything beyond Actually, most interpreting courses in the U.K. (and elsewhere, at least for conference intepreters) focus on teaching interpreting techniques, and in the process of doing this, deal with a range of subjects including the ones that you just mentioned.

These subjects can be dealt with both at a conference level (with simultaneous or consecutive interpreting), or at a liason level (bilateral consecutive with business negotiations for example). Depending on which one you want to do there are different courses.

In the University of Leeds and the University of Westminster, there are courses for liason and conference interpreting, and Bath University has a conference course. If you really like interpreting, I'd say go for one of the conference courses right away, because that would open the doors to any kind of interpreting, from public service to conference interpreting in international organizations or even diplomatic interpreting. (I personally went to Leeds, so I'm going to give them a little extra supporticon_wink.gif)

Hope that helps in some way.

Financial reasons Oct 12, 2008

The reason behind my interest in interpreting is mainly financial. It's much more profitable than translation.

Do you consider taking a preparatory course for DPSI a good idea before enrolling for any of the interpreting courses?
