Hello,

Did anyone read the article in The Times today about the phone google is looking to bring out in a couple of year with live interpreting software?

http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/tech_and_web/personal_tech/article7017831.ece

Have to say I've been expecting for something like this to be announced for a while now.

Sure it will be quite basic to begin with but not good new really!

As I answered in another question, not too much to get worried about.
Just look at the translator, anything that is accurate is the fault of live translators submitting their work!

I am sure that it might be ok for some friendly chit chat but hardly capable of handling a business meeting or a NATO conference!

Different spin in things ;-) Feb 10, 2010

A columnist from the same paper followed up with a tongue-in-cheek article:

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/guest_contributors/article7018428.ece

The comments at the end are also worth the read, especially a certain Peter Guinn who wrote:
"We had just purchased translation software and decided to test it with a memo I had recently written on a personnel issue. In the memo I referred to its subject as "a young man whom I cannot help liking." After that had been translated into Spanish and back into English, it was rendered "a youth with whom I cannot restrain myself from taking pleasure." Clearly, the passage had gained something in translation."
