First interpreting experience - is this normal?

What you have done is not "normal" interpreting - it was only a formality where there was no real exchange of proposals / counter-proposals; at least one party had obviously no interest at all in listening to the other party - this notary was just going through the motions - you can hardly "interpret" for someone not listening.
