Tariffe in Italia Thread poster: Francesco Barbuto

Salve,
Sebbene sia italianissimo, ho lavorato pochissimo per agenzie italiane, anche perché
dall'estero pagano meglio.
Mi domandavo, avendo ricevuto una proposta
da un agenzia italiana: ma che tariffe viggono da noi? A me sembrano offensivamente
basse ed inaccettabili.
Che fare?

Che fare? lavorare per l'estero, e beato te che lo stai già facendo regolarmente. Se te lo puoi permettere, la cosa migliore è accettare da clienti italiani solo le offerte buone o almeno decenti (chiaramente le eccezioni alla regola ci sono, in Italia come all'estero). Buona fortuna!

...la domanda era RIGOROSAMENTE retorica. Per inciso, l'agenzia che mi ha contattato si fa pagare 19,50 Euro a pagina per la combinazione italiano-->inglese. Poichè, mediamente, una agenzia prende almeno il 50% della commissione, ne segue che al traduttore sono disposti a pagare, al più, solo miseri 9,50 Euro a pagina; le stesse tariffe applicate nel mercato dell'India, tanto per fare un esempio. Praticamente, è più conveniente lavorare come colf: almeno, non devi sprecare alcuni anni di dedizione allo studio e molti altri anni di impegno professionale serio e rigoroso. Oltrettutto, tali medesime agenzie, pretendono la Luna!!! Secondo me, tali tariffe sono semplicemente offensive. Sarò pazzo, ma per meno di 0.08 USD a parola, io non lavoro!

I'm mad too then!! It's true that
the rates offered by most Italian agencies are indeed risible - only it's no laughing matter.
I know this is a topic that has come up again and again in the forums but the fact that Proz accepts job postings offering rates of 0.02/0.03 Euro per word does not help matters. Rates like these (and there have been plenty recently), make a mockery of the profession and are not limited to Italian agencies. I noticed a few days back, a Canadian agency offering the same rates, rates they know they couldn't get away with in Canada - but had no qualms about posting on Proz.
When will rates hit bottom, I wonder? At 0.1 Euro per word? Soon we'll be paying for the privilege!! Any translator worth their salt won't accept the miserly rates offered by many Italian agencies, or others familiar with what I'm afraid to say is the bargain basement aspect of Proz.
The sad thing is, there are people out there who WILL accept these "crumbs" and in so doing, exert further downward pressure on rates, bringing poverty wages to us all.It's becoming extremely difficult for translators to make a living when this is the kind of competition they're up against.Yes, it's a free world: nobody is forced to bid for these jobs - but is this the way forward? To have a site which is increasingly frequented by agencies who offer peanuts and "translators" who are NOT worth their salt?
I recently became Platinum because I happen to believe that Proz is a great site - I've learnt so much from my proz colleagues in the past year, made friends, and have generally had fun.However, I, and from what I understand, I am far from alone, would be a whole lot happier if Proz did a bit more to discourage the exploitative rates offered by many of its job posters. Many suggestions of how to go about this have been posted in the forums but it seems that Proz is reluctant to start imposing limits of any kind. I believe this is a mistake. As Francesco pointed out, cleaning for a living is more lucrative these days......

Come dicevi tu stesso l'argomento dei bid e del gioco al ribasso è già stato dibattuto varie volte, in particolare in un forum italiano recente. Spero che la discussione su questo punto non degeneri Purtroppo non posso dare torto a Francesco: spesso si guadagna di più con un lavoro meno qualificato (oltre ad avere molti meno pensieri). Però mi ostino a credere che valga la pena di "buttare" degli anni all'università (se non per una crescita professionale almeno per quella umana), anche quando i fatti sembrano darmi torto. Ma non voglio perdermi in sproloqui che c'entrano poco con la questione delle tariffe. Saluti
