I was wondering if anyone knows what the average conversion rate is between Japanese character counts to English word counts when going from J to E. Thanks.

Hi. Usually it is 2 J=1 E: 1000 J chars = 500 E words.
Although it can be somewhat lower (as in less than 500 E words per 1000 J chars), depending on the field. A good rule is 2J=1E.

Or 2,5 Japanese characters=1 English word... Oct 4, 2006

...which is the conversion rate I use myself. I believe this is a quite common way to "convert" the count of Japanese characters to the number of English words.

There were numerous discussions on this already Oct 4, 2006

For quoting in target English wordcount, please see the following discussions:

I think the concensus for the conversion multiplier was 2.5, but see the posts because there are several issues to look at.

Thank you from me also : ) May 17, 2012

I just came across this thread today. I am a newcomer to Japanese - English translation and I decided to browse on Proz. I wanted to know what I should charge per word and how to count the words in the first place so thanks everyone, especially Katalin who has been very informative
