Declining all answers individually, question left open - are askers encouraged to do that?

An asker today declined, individually, all four answers to a question asked 2 weeks ago, without comment, and left the question open.
Obviously the answerers were not happy by the snub, but one colleague remarked that askers actually receive a message to the effect that "You may wait for additional answers. In the meantime, please decline any of the answers so far that have been unacceptable."

Obviously the answerers were not happy by the snub, but one colleague remarked that askers actually receive a message to the effect that "You may wait for additional answers. In the meantime, please decline any of the answers so far that have been unacceptable."

Does that mean askers are encouraged to give commentless snubs, probably leaving the question forever open (because a question that's been asked 2 weeks ago rarely receives new answers, nor will the asker be wanting the answers anymore!)

I just went on the Forum search and found dozens of discussions on "declining answers", and also found the following remark by Steffen:

the possibility to decline answers individually. To my knowledge, the latter feature has long been phased out.

Apparently not? What's the use of it anyway? Isn't it basically just there to allow askers to leave questions open indefinitely without the nuisance of receiving email reminders to close questions??

Rather like those askers who restrict their questions to site members only without realising that this adversely affects their chance of getting a full complement of answers (see http://www.proz.com/forum/kudoz/157270-about_the_only_prozcom_members_may_answer_option.html).

There are certain buttons that just confuse users, especially novices. There is a strong case for removing them.

Just found this one underneath the discussion box for a KudoZ-question:

"In order to post in the ask-the-asker box and peer grade other users' answers in this question, users should have at least 20 PRO points in the corresponding language pair."

So, a brand-new member who happens to be an absolute specialist in this field but hasn't had an opportunity yet to pile up any KudoZ-points is not allowed to answer? Bizarre. I didn't know that this option even existed.

I got the same message for all English monolingual and German to English questions and I have 2,157 pro points in English monolingual and 20,257 pro points in German to English. I can't participate in any of them.

Re: 20 pro points needed Jun 12, 2010

I am not able to agree with any answers. I just logged in and saw this. At first I thought it was 20 pro points in that specific subject, but it says just for the language pair. What I found funny is that it will allow me to suggest an answer, yet it won't let me agree or disagree with anyone. Could it be some sort of glitch?

Perhaps a new thread is in order? Any idea as to what's going on—anyone?

LOL

I thought "this is worse than not being allowed to answer glossary building questions!!"

Same here (and I have quite a few more than 20 points), so it could either be a bug or, more likely, staff might be working on something brand new. I suspect the latter, since there is that writing in red below the buttons. We'll find out soon enough, I'm sure. There hasn't been any announcement yet about any planned limitations. It only makes sense to see this Friday night; according to statistics most people get laid off on a Friday, so they'll have the entire weekend to cool off... ; )

I'm sure it is a glitch.
The "ask-the-asker box" does not even exist any more: it was replaced by the "discussion" box (as a result of a merger with the "clarification" box) way back in March 2009.

Cheers,
johanna

Glitch Jun 12, 2010

Well, right now it is not possible to comment on any answer because the entry fields have vanished. Makes me feel bad for all the colleagues who apparently have to work during the weekend (what fun anyway...) and don't receive any feedback.

... as a ProZ.com novice and with my first KudoZ question ever posted. Being confused about the buttons, esp. the Decline button, I accidently pushed it - and this to an answer entered by Steffen! Till today I think about it occasionally and wonder whether Steffen knows about this 'accident' and that a decline was not my intention at all ...?

Best regards,
and an exciting football Word Cup weekend,

The topic wasn't getting that much attention anyway, except from Andrew, so as they say in showbiz, any attention is better than no attention.
