This because monolingual questions are not requests for term-for-term translation, they are more open-ended, asking for explanation instead. We could do entirely without the term box in the answer here, the explanation box is what's important.

I've actually seen (and in fact done) this even for language pairs. A lot of questions do not concern a specific word per se but pertain to sentence logic or other things that require some length.

Yes, and also many people see the need to vary any sort of longer translation – of an entire phrase in particular – so that no newbie botches a translation job in the future by applying that answer in a context where it doesn't work.

To keep the wolf fed and the sheep intact (a Polish idiom), I'd suggest perhaps a tick box that qualifies the answer proposal as context-limited.
