KudoZ, I mean KUDOS, to Jason! Aug 20, 2005

I just want to go on record about how impressed I am with the speed the suggestions and comments are given attention. Given that we are spread in all the timezones of the world, it's almost as if Jason is reading our feedbacks around the clock, tirelessly reponding and making changes as he scrutinizes each raised issue.
I have this picture of Jason swivelling in his chair or rolling back and forth between workstations, cold coffee and remnants of chinese takeouts in between keyboards... (

Thanks for all the hardwork. Between the excellent comments and suggestions coming from colleagues here and the sincerity of Henry, Jason and their team to improve the Kudoz feature, I have every confidence we're going to get something all of us are going to be really okay with.

How can I tell you if the source language is UK english or American english? Im not a linguist, I am just a translator for technical terms. This should be a choice for the asker, not for the answerer.

Hi Ernesto,

Answerers should not have seen an option to choose the dialect of the source language; that was a glitch. I have corrected that, thanks for pointing it out.

Best regards,

Jason

toolbar-Mozilla Firefox Aug 20, 2005

Hi there,

I use mozilla firefox and have been unable to download the new toolbar. I've read what it was said in this thread, but didn't seem to work. Any suggestions?

Andrea

Dialect or variety? Aug 20, 2005

Several posters have expressed dissatisfaction with the choice of the term 'dialect' to refer to geographical varieties of a language. I have posted elsewhere on this topic,

and will not bother to repeat that here.

However, I will point out that (geographical) 'variety', the term which seems to be most in favor with posters who object to 'dialect', is, in fact, comparable to the way the term 'dialect' is used in linguistics, and that this use of the term 'dialect', rather than reflecting badly on a site for language professionals (as some have expressed), is particularly appropriate for such a site.

Kudoz toolbar suggestions Aug 21, 2005

Hello all,

First of all many thanks to Henry, Jason and the team for these improvements.

Secondly I have a couple of suggestions for the kudoz toolbar.

1. Imho it's essential that a bidirectional search function is available. For those who only work with only 2 languages this means we never have to change the language pairs (retaining the settings after browser shutdown would also be great).

2. It would be excellent to be able to do the Kudoz-

click on name > kudoz miniprofile - click on image > full profile Aug 21, 2005

I either want to look at their specialist subjects (not the ones they've earned points in - i have points in areas that are not my specialisations!), their native language, their experience, the way they word their profile... or I want to send them a message.

Hi Hilary, I had posted a similar question too. In the new beta release (not the V3) by clicking on the name you get the kudoz miniprofile dteials, and by clicking on the image (IF a photo or logo have been uploaded) you access full member profile.

Ciao, DZ

Profiles and mozilla Aug 21, 2005

Yes, that's what I'm complaining about - it puts an extra step in the way. I'd actually prefer NOT to have the mini profile there at all. I feel it's a hindrance rather than a help, and I'd be interested to see if anyone else feels the same way.

I must confess I agree.... especially because more often then not the pop up windows don't seem to work (along with the one with the green/red dot denoting availability).

On the subject of Mozilla Firefox and the toolbar, Complete mystery!!

It has now worked nae bother at all....

I re-opened the "allow" page where I had already said that I could download from Proz, said accept AGAIN, tried to download the toolbar from the link and it worked straight away. COMPLETE MYSTERY!!!

Och well, never mind.... at least it works now.

Cheers,

Andrea
