MA/Diploma in Interpreting and Translating

The MA/Diploma in Interpreting and Translating is a one-year, full-time programme which aims to prepare linguists for careers as interpreters and/or translators. It is open to graduates, and students expecting to graduate during the current academic year, who show that they have the required linguistic aptitude.

Course Content

All students take the following core units:

Professional translation

Liaison interpreting

Consecutive interpreting

Simultaneous interpreting

(In Semester 2, students may replace this with additional translation units)

From December, a series of mini-conferences are organised to create realistic conditions for students to practise their interpreting skills.

In addition, a number of elective units are offered, designed to provide students with background knowledge that will underpin their interpreting and translation work. These include:

International economics

Elements of law

The institutions of the European Union

Introduction to EU and international law

Translating international legal documents

Intercultural communication

Information technology for linguists

Approaches to professional work

The regular classes set out above are supplemented by visits from professional translators and interpreters.

Students who wish to proceed to the MA must submit a 15,000 word dissertation after successful completion of the taught section of the programme.

Not all language combinations will necessarily be available every year, according to demand.
