Coming up soon in Barcelona (March, full details below) are two workshops on the corpus approach to developing a specialism.

Many people are of the opinion that being a specialist translator is one way to fight off recession: rather than being one in the pile - as they say in Spanish:-) - you float to the top, set yourself apart, offer a craft not a commodity, an added-value service not a generic good.

Few of us can afford the time or money to study a specialism, but the corpus approach is one way to gradually acquire expertise.

If you are interested, I suggest you look at this following recent forum discussion:
http://www.proz.com/forum/translation_theory_and_practice/121702-practical_advice_for_acquiring_and_enhancing_linguistic_competence_for_specialties.html

You could then have a look at Kevin Lossner's very practical analysis of the tools we use:

Finally, you can read our article:
Acquiring or enhancing a translation specialism: the monolingual corpus-guided approach
http://www.jostrans.org/issue10/art_maher.php

If all that intrigues you, consider coming to Barcelona:

Tuesday, 3 March (16:00-19:00)
Corpus-guided editing and translation, part 1
Mining target-language corpora to guide English editing and translation: an introduction to a problem-solving approach
Mary Ellen Kerans, Ailish Maher, Stephen Waller

Tuesday, 17 March (16:00-19:00)
Corpus-guided editing and translation, part 2
Building specialised corpora to guide translation and editing: concepts and tools
