Then plan your journey using the route planner on the AA website, one of Britain's breakdown services.

There you enter different types of informatione when searching for a route, such as street name, postcode, town, city or place of interest.

The resulting routes are very detailed and even give details about petrol stations, speed cameras etc. You can also choose to see a map of your route and reverse the route for the return journey.

The following link takes you straight to the route planner page: http://www.theaa.com/travelwatch/planner_main.jsp?database=B

Safe journey!

getting to Edinburgh city centre from Edinburgh airport Oct 12, 2006

If you're arriving at Edinburgh airport, you can either pick up a cab outside Edinburgh airport, which will probably set you back £12-£15 pounds, or take the airport bus (service 100 operated by Lothian Buses).

The airport bus leaves approximately every 10 minutes and takes you right into the heart of the city terminating on Waverley Bridge, which is a 3-minute walk from the Thistle and a 5-minute walk from both the Ibis and Holiday Inn Express. The journey takes about 25 minutes.

Two practical questions Oct 20, 2006

Hi,

What kind of weather can we expect?
Too cold? Too rainy? Eventually some snow? Please, not the three at the same time

Can we easily withdaw money from ATM machines or do you think is better to take some GBP? Are payments in EUR accepted?

Thanks in advance,
Carla

weather report Oct 20, 2006

Hi Carla

Hm, the weather... that's a tricky one. In the middle of November, it could be quite cold, there may be rain but on the other hand we might be lucky and have some wonderful crisp and dry weather with blue skies and sunshine. As for snow, Edinburgh is very close to the sea and doesn't really get that much snow, certainly not that early in the year. But the again, you never know these days.

At the moment, it's far too mild for the season with temperatures in Edinburgh today ranging from 13-18°C.

If you want to find out what the weather is like nearer the time, perhaps check on www.bbc.co.uk for a 5-day weather forecast for Edinburgh.

With regards to the currency, you have to pay in GBP, Euros are not accepted. You can withdraw money easily from an ATM with your credit card or with a debit card bearing the Visa debit or Maestro signs (there may be others that I'm not aware of).

We would definitely recommend to bring some GBP (or withdraw it from an ATM on arrival). This would be particularly useful to those who are coming to the pre-conference drinks at Grape on Thursday night ( ). Also, we would like to ask everyone who is bringing a guest to the networking dinner to pay £21 in cash (if you could bring exact change that would be very much appreciated) when registering on day 1 of the conference.

In Edinburgh, there are plenty of ATMs and if I remember correctly, there is one in the St. James Centre, the shopping centre that can be reached through the hotel

Hope I've covered everything

Regards

Rebekka

The Edinburgh Pass gives you free transport, free entry to 30 top attractions + other discounts:

http://www.edinburgh.org/pass/

The Royal Mile (the main street linking Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace) is great fun for all with lots of spooky little 'closes' (alleyways) to explore:

http://www.aboutscotland.com/edin/royal.html

Here, you'll find The Museum of Childhood, a wonderful celebration of children and toys through the ages with lots of hands-on displays - and it's free! Details on

http://www.cac.org.uk/ (this is the main site for all museums in and around Edinburgh)

At the Camera Obscura you can get an amazing view of the city and have fun with light and illusions:

http://www.explore-edinburgh.com/camera.html

Kids of all ages love visiting 'the big museums' in Chamber Street: The National Museum of Scotland is actually two adjoining buildings, one covering the history of Scotland, the other with a more general scope. The oldest, the Royal Museum, has nothing to do with the Royal family but contains everything from stuffed elephants to working steam engines and the fantastic Millenium Clock in the main hall. Its neighbour, Museum of Scotland, is a stunning modern building with excellent light effects, presenting the displays of e.g. Roman and Viking artefacts most beautifully.
Again, entry is free, and the displays are very child-friendly, especially those in the Royal Museum. (And yes, I had to check out which was which before writing this!) Main site:

www.nms.ac.uk

For older children, Dynamic Earth at the end of the Royal Mile is an amazing experience (and educational, too!):

http://www.explore-edinburgh.com/html/dynamic.html

Even in November, Edinburgh Zoo is well worth a visit:

http://www.edinburghzoo.org.uk/

Approx. 20 minutes from the city centre by bus or train, Deep Sea World is another very child-friendly attraction which boasts the longest underwater tunnel in Europe:

http://www.deepseaworld.com/

Finally, I can recommend Ocean Terminal for those of you who would like to fit in a bit of shopping along the way:

http://www.oceanterminal.com/

Apart from lots of shops, this complex includes a play centre and a cinema. This is also where you'll find the Royal Yacht Britannia:

http://www.royalyachtbritannia.co.uk/

And for some fresh air, should you be fortunate enough to get nice weather during your stay, there's a good play area at the West End of Princes Street Gardens...

As you can see, you could easily spend a couple of weeks here and still have plenty left to see and do. Hope this gives you some ideas - have a great stay in Scotland!
