Translation and Cultural Dialogue

The FIT Asian Translators Forum is an international conference held every three years under the auspices of the International Translators Federation/Fédération Internationale des Traducteurs (FIT). The FIT 5th Asian Translators Forum which will be held in the City of Bogor, West-Java Province, Indonesia, 11-12 April, 2007. The event is hosted by Himpunan Penerjemah Indonesia/The Association of Indonesian Translators.

Background
Translating and interpreting are more than mere means of transferring messages from one language to another. Both play important and strategic roles in the dialogue between cultures. The theme of the Forum is “Translation and Cultural Dialogue”, and the aim is to highlight translation and interpretation as intercultural media in an age marked by rapid changes on a global scale. The increased mobility of people, goods and services, as well as the ever-growing streams of information can result in mutually beneficial exchanges, but may also induce anxieties toward the unknown. This forum provides translators, interpreters, and translation scholars with an opportunity to exchange views about the role of translators, interpreters, and translation activities as a “bridge” connecting various cultures.

The theme of this 5th Forum, Translation and Cultural Dialogue, will be divided into the following sub-themes:
1) Translation and Publishing
2) Translation and Interpretation in Cultural Activities and Tourism
3) Translation and Interpretation and the Languages of the Minorities
4) Translation and Interpretation in Diplomatic, Legal and Social Activities
5) Translation and the Transfer of Technology
6) Translation and Interpretation in International Business Activities
7) Translators and Interpreters Training
