Just translated a patent for a ball-point pen, apparently trying to patent the idea that one can write with it.

Kugelschreiber mit manuell aktivierbaren Soundmodul nach einem der vorangehenden Ansprüche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man mit ihm schreiben kann.

Ball-point pen with manually activated sound module in accordance with one of the preceding claims, characterized in that one can write with it.

Are there any other such oddities out there?

laser pointer Oct 4, 2005

I have a friend who's a patent lawyer and she told me that a claim had been filed for the use of a laser pointer as a cat toy... Now I've been thinking to file a claim for the use of an old violin string for the same purpose (cat toy) and become rich.

But what on earth is the purpose of a sound module on a ball point pen?

It's an advertising gimmick Oct 4, 2005

I think the idea is that when you use it, it will cry "Vorsprung durch Technik!" or something of the sort. Seems pretty weird to me, I must admit.

If you fill it up with so much additional technology, then it is quite imbropable that it can still fulfill its main purpose. So then it is a real advance if the ball point pen with foldable ping-pong bat can still write etc.

Just think of a pen/flash chip with usb connector: you can only write with it in one way - ink or bytes

Greetings Andrew

btw. Vorsprung durch Technik, would be reseved for Q, even if he is not from Ingolstadt.

Something like this?

It could claim that a door is a jar.

They are.. Oct 5, 2005

When applying for a patent, you have to prove that it is a new - a very new - idea, otherwise you won't get more than a utility model.

On the other hand, you have to classify it according to the catalogue of the patent office, i.e. finding it in their catalogue..

As a result, you can find the same idea in 10 different patents, just like you can tell a joke in 10 different ways.
(I verified this for 3D screens.)

So in my eyes patents are only good to keep the lawyers busy..
