For those lucky enough to be in or near Montreal, Canada, on 12 June 2009, please take note of the following conference organised by the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada:

Conference Program
In the last decades, language has become an important cleavage in most multicultural societies. Particularly multilingual countries, but also larger supranational entities such as the European Union, have witnessed increased salience of issues related to language. As a result, there is not only a significant expansion of language policies and legislation that have been implemented, but also a growing number of heated debates over national unity, rights of linguistic minorities, collective identities, etc. Given the fact that the notion of language simultaneously includes inclusive and exclusive aspects, identity politics play a major role in these debates. In this conference we will discuss the ways in which language and language policies have become important elements of identity politics in different European and North American countries. The first panel will deal with the question of language conflict and identity politics. Panelists will explore the way language is seen as an important marker of collective identities in general, as well as the cases of Switzerland and Belgium. The second panel will examine the challenges immigration poses for official languages policies in Switzerland, Canada and the USA. The third panel will deal with the question whether language policies in multilingual countries such as Switzerland or Canada can serve as models for a language policy of the European Union, in particular with regard to the role identity politics play in these policies.

Panelists will speak in both French and English.
