Union or not? Apr 6, 2006

Thanks!

It was interesting to find out that European Union is translated in Denmark as European Association for connotation reasons. We have a completely opposite situation in Lithuania, where the translation is direct. Yet the world "union" is almost synonymous with "Soviet Union". Though I have nothing against this translation, this play of words is often used and abused by euroscepticists. I wonder what about your country (for those form EU)?

Hi Karolis,
the word "union" has neither in German nor in Polish any negative connotations - to my knowledge at least.

The fact you mention is interesting, we don't have this problem in Poland, as the Sowiet "Union" = "Zwiazek" Radzieckiicon_wink.gif

Regards,
Aleksandra
