As he had once said in one of his famous verses, "Nazım Hikmet continues to insist on being a traitor," (forgive my humble translation!) the Greatest Poet of All Times (my idea!), deceased, has still not been able to get a "This Guy Is No Traitor" Certificate from his beloved nation. "Shame on us!", I want to cry.

I just wonder if you have heard about him and his poetry. How does it feel reading his poetry in another language? Is it striking enough? What is the current situation with Nazım translations in your country? Anything you could write will be much appreciated.

Greetings to all,

Çağdaş

I think that the certificate has already been given him by the nation, but the state! We know and love him; official decisions are not important.

Hi Çağdaş,
I think the best way to do this is to provide some links and let the larger community here at Proz chime in on what they think. Some informative links:

Angina Pectoris, by Nazim Hikmet Aug 4, 2008

This is one of my favourite poems by Hikmet.

Angina Pectoris

If half my heart is here, doctor,
the other half is in China
with the army flowing
toward the Yellow River.
And, every morning, doctor,
every morning at sunrise my heart
is shot in Greece.
And every night,c doctor,
when the prisoners are asleep and the infirmary is deserted,
my heart stops at a run-down old house
in Istanbul.
And then after ten years
all i have to offer my poor people
is this apple in my hand, doctor,
one read apple:
my heart.
And that, doctor, that is the reason
for this angina pectoris--
not nicotine, prison, or arteriosclerosis.
I look at the night through the bars,
and despite the weight on my chest
my heart still beats with the most distant stars.

I have no doubt you and I know and adore him but I can't think the current government and its supporters would do so! (Not to forget they are in majority at present) You know they most often include Nazım in a stupid comparison and competition with Necip Fazıl Kısakürek or Mehmet Akif Ersoy. Racing poets like race horses instead of reading and trying to comprehend. That's why I chose "nation."

great poet Aug 4, 2008

Dear Çağdaş,

unfortunately, I don't know Turkish but I think the German and Italian translators did a very good job. I love Hikmet's poetry and I agree with you, he is definitely one of the greatest poets. It's a pity that I cannot read these beautiful poems in the original version.

Well, our nation is not free of that sin either. As a nation we are not civil (as in distinguished from military and politics) If you are from this part, like this poet, if from that part like that poet. Sadly this is the case. People are shallow like that. I like persons though.

Thanks Çağdaş Apr 19, 2009

Oh I love his poetry.
His many poems have been translated into Hindi.

One of my favourite poems by Nâzım

The most beautiful sea :
is the sea which is not reached yet.
The most beautiful child :
hasn't grown yet.
The most beautiful days of ours :
are those which we didn't live yet.
And the most beautiful words I want to tell you :
are the words which I did'nt tell yet...
