Dear Colleagues,

I am about to sign a contract with an Indian publisher regarding the translation of a book. Does anyone have a standard contract in English that might be helpful in this connection? Preferably one which mentions both fees and royalties.

I have feeling that the key issue may be here which law is going to govern your contract. Should it be the law of India, the best idea would be to get a copy of such contract used in India and adjusted to that law.

Best Regards

Some model contracts... Aug 7, 2009

Morning! This is a tricky subject. I have translated a number of books myself in Brazil, and signed a contract basically saying that I have no right whatsoever over the content of the book, fees, royalties, etc. This was my own choice, though. I had a particular love for the book subject matter, and it turned out to be a more long-term project with the client, so it worked well for me. It might be very different for you, though.

I think that Stanislaw's suggestion is a good one. As this is an Indian publisher, it would be a good idea to get a copy of a standard contract used there first.

I have found a few online resources for model contracts. Hopefully they will be of some assistance in helping you decide to sign (or not) the contract with the Indian publisher.

All the best and happy translating!icon_smile.gif
