Translating a novel into another language can be a complicated business at best. But for Gili Bar Hillel, official Israeli translator of the Harry Potter series, the job presents some unique challenges. When Bar Hillel accepted the commission to translate the first book, Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone, in 2000, it seemed to be a fairly straightforward piece of work. But in the past five years, the Harry Potter phenomenon has snowballed. With fans clamoring for translations of each new book almost before it hits the shops in the original English, the pressure is very much on.

"I translate for the children and adults who read the books," she explains. "For me, the most important thing is to convey Rowling's humor, her puns and wordplay, and of course the wonderful story. Something undoubtedly gets 'lost in translation,' but it's my job to ensure that the heart and soul of the series remains very much alive."
