Hi,

I should have preferred to develop this news in French, but you can judge by yourself according to the article La mention "patients de race noire" retirée des notices de médicaments published by Le NouvelObs.

So, maybe we will soon have to review/re-write every manual or handout for medical students explaining the features of the sickle cell disease or the dyslipidosis, for instance, those diseases being prevalent among some specific ethnic groups ...

I think it just does not make sense !

See :

Have a nice day
Catherine

Not aimed at you Catherine, but at the original article. We can not know if this is a translation problem (it's all the fault of those mad bad translators again) or one to be found in the original. Who is going to tranlate 'heavily pigmented skin/skin with a high melanin ratio' with the words 'race noir'?

Finally, this evening, we can find on the Net the original article published by La Marseillaise. It involves both the AFSSAPS - already mentioned by the whole French Press - and the HAS (haute autorité de santé).

In a first time, the latter denies any responsibility, then gives "its own" alternative terminology.

Still as absurd as before !

Note that the article published by the NouvelObs was taken up, down to the last coma, by all the media : Le Parisien, Romandie.com, TF1.news, etc.
So, it could be an "informal" press release.

The only exception : Europe1 which gives a further description of the said "translation problem" :

Just wonderful... Jan 29, 2011

A big PC blooper and no-one can be held accountable for it - just a wonderful image about how "responsibility" has to be written in the Western world in general and in the EU in particular.

(After having read the 2nd article mentioned by Catherine: it has been going on for some 20 years, that's enough time for a child to reach adult age. I mean, folks - is this serious or just an acceptable way to get some attention, speaking of the media?)
