I have recently been approached by a company from the healthcare sector. They have asked whether I would be interested in collaborating with them on translation and localisation projects. One side of this would involve the translation, editing and localisation of health questionnaires. The other side of this may involve project management such as recruiting clinicians and patients in order to conduct these questionnaires locally.

As regards the rates for the translation/editing/localisation work, I am likely to go with my usual rates for these services. However, I am not sure what I should be charging for the other side of the work, which is more consultancy based, involving the recruitment of specialists and patients. I have a good deal of experience in medical translations, however, I haven't worked in a medical setting for some time and I'm not sure about rates for these type of services.

I certainly don't want to sell myself short, as the consultancy side of this contract could be quite complicated and time-consuming, involving travel and attending healthcare settings.

Is there anyone out there with experience in this sector who could advise me about the hourly rates I should be charging for the consultancy service? Rates in euros or pounds would be appreciated.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post.

Best,

Louise

Hello again. Sep 28, 2013

I'm glad the information I supplied to your identical question a day or so ago was of some use, but you misunderstood me. It seems to me that ProZ is really not the right place for a query like this. When I mentioned the Healthcare/Life Science SECTOR , I meant in the world of business, not in the medical section of ProZ, along the lines of the link I supplied. I'm sorry if that wasn't clear enough.

Edited later to add:
My apologies for being off the mark, and it's good to kno

My apologies for being off the mark, and it's good to know you are getting some helpful advice. It seemed very farfetched to me to combine two such different sets of responsibilities under one hat based on my related experience a quite a few years ago in the healthcare industry (international personnel placement/headhunting, also for clinical research/trial organizations). It's always good to learn something new.

Hello again Woodstock Sep 28, 2013

Thanks for following this up. Yes, I did misunderstand... Part of the trouble is that this company would like me to do reviewing/translation/localisation of Health-Related Questionnaires, but also I may have to enter into the Project Management side of things such as recruiting clinicians and patients, as mentioned.

They want me to come up with an hourly fee, which is obviously very difficult to do when trying o cover all these options. Anyway, I will do some further research along the lines you suggest and just come up with a fee that I will be happy with either way. I don't want to under-charge because it could be a complex task, but then obviously I do want my rates to be competitive enough that they will be happy with them. Tricky... I suppose it is open to some discussion and negotiation with them.

Thanks so much for all your time and imput on this.

Best,

Louise

I should be able to help you a little bit.

I know for a fact there are other translators on Proz.com who provide these services; hopefully some of them will offer more insight.
