Possible to buy the "Muse" feature separately?

Hi,
I own an older version of MemoQ Pro (build 4.5.78). I have 2 questions:

Is it possible to just upgrade exclusively with the new feature "Muse" (predictive typing) ?
How much would cost a full upgrade to the current version of MemoQ Pro as compared to buying it for the first time?

Thanks very much,
Mike

I had a similar upgrade question, because I bought my last MemoQ a few years ago. The reply was disappointing: you pay the upgrade price PER YEAR that you did not upgrade. After about 3 years that means there really is no point in upgrading - you'll have to pay full price. Minus the usual discounts that amounts to about 360 euros, which isn't that bad, seeing as support is part of that package. I was annoyed at first, because it really amounts to a yearly subscription - yet another - but at least MemoQ upgrades really give you a productivity advantage.

HTH

Yes, this could be used, but not quite as good as found in some CATs Nov 8, 2013

Hi Samuel,
nice to hear from you again!
Yes, I know about LMT, still I have it on my system, although for normal text I would use Typing Assistant, an alternative where you can import different dictionaries.

In order to be useful in a CAT you will have to extract your target sentences of your TMs first, and still such an aid would produce a lot of "noise". But yes, it's practicable.

LMT will propose you a max. of 2 words at once, but Autosuggest in Trados, the same feature in DVX2, and I guess also the one in MemoQ will all go much further by looking in your Translation Memory to propose you longer chunks of useful completions. A subtle difference.

As for MemoQ, that's the only new feature I would currently need and enjoy, so that's why I was asking the above.

Thanks and cheers,
Mike

Bad news... but makes sense Nov 9, 2013

Although individually --in this case for you-- it is bad news, I hope you understand that those of us who have been paying our maintenance fees year after year are supporting Kilgray's development of memoQ. Without the maintenance fees, the progress the tool has made (including Muses) over the years would have been impossible.

It is only fair that you would now pay a full license after all this time. After all, one can safely assume that your investment in memoQ has paid off in your case. It would surely pay in saved time and faster work if you upgraded...

Well, my answer to Marinus could be misleading, sorry. I fully agree with you, also my opinion about MemoQ is a very good one, surely the best CAT tool I have ever used, and I will consider upgrading in the future.

But some developers also have a modular system, a pay-for-use system in their licensing. This is just not the case with MemoQ, it's neither good nor bad, it's just marketing. I respect that.

Greets,
Mike

Muses, auto-pick, and predictive typing in memoQ Nov 9, 2013

Hi Mike,

I think 'Muses' are something different than the relatively new 'predictive typing' and 'auto-pick' features in memoQ, although they are related. I think Muses can be created and trained, and then used to feed auto-pick and predictive typing.

auto-pick: http://kilgray.com/memoq/2013/help-en/index.html?autopick.html
predictive typing: http://kilgray.com/memoq/2013/help-en/index.html?autocomplete_of_hit_list.html

The Muse: http://kilgray.com/memoq/2013/help-en/index.html?
Train a Muse: http://kilgray.com/memoq/2013/help-en/index.html?edit_the_muse.html

The web is remarkably scarce on information about "muses" in MemoQ, so I can only go on what I read in MemoQ's help files and see in videos. The way I see it, "muses" are just autocomplete scripts that allow you to specify the content to generate matches from. MemoQ's appears to be better than most other tools' that I've seen (judging by all the options in the dialog box), but that's that.

A few other options: Nov 9, 2013

InstantText (http://www.fitaly.com/ )
IntelliComplete (http://www.intellicomplete.com/ )
LetMeType (http://www.clasohm.com/lmt/en/ )
PhraseExpress (http://www.phraseexpress.com/ )
Shorthand (http://www65.pair.com/lim/shorthand/ )
Smartype (http://www.smartype.com/ )
Typing Assistant (http://www.sumitsoft.com/ )
FastFox Text Expander (http://www.nch.com.au/fastfox/index.html?gclid=CPDk_L2I2LoCFZMdtAodeXYAaQ )

These are all programs that do some kind of text expansion, auto-completion, text prediction, etc. And then there is of course AutoHotkey…

I am currently trying out InstantText, PhraseExpress and Typing Assistant.

Although there is nothing that can compete with CafeTran's built in auto-complete system for typing inside a CAT tool, I'm looking for a system-wide solution for use outside of my CAT tool.

Michael

PS: it's strange that if you Google 'IntelliComplete', 'PhraseExpress' or 'Typing Assistant', the first Google hit is always the http://www.nch.com.au/ website (!!!): http://www.nch.com.au/fastfox/index.html?gclid=CKCZvpWJ2LoCFQ7LtAodg3AA-Q

Looks like the NCH Software people are very good at SEO.

Thanks for your insights Nov 10, 2013

thanks, Samuel, this is really to the point. The 3 solutions shown here are probably the best typing aids availailable to be used with or without a CAT (LMT discussed above is freely available). I have used IntelliComplete and Typing Assistant and they are very good, able to show multiple words, and you can create personal dictionaries or download other ones (TA).

Soon I will get aMUSEd... with the 45-day free trial of the latest MemoQ. Currently I can only use the 4Free edition, but I was able to take a look at the documentation of the full release.
Predictive Typing and the Muse are 2 different features, although they do the same by proposing typing suggestions. Both offer a lot more control over the process than in Trados or DVX2.

With the Muse you build expressions from your TMs to be added to the Predictive Typing. You can set how many times an expression must be present in the TM, and how "reliable" the extraction is (the bigger your TM, the more reliable the results will be, but you can increase the extraction quantity at the cost of precision if you want). All this can be set with sliders before starting the operation.

The Predictive Typing itself has a separate Option window where you have also a lot of setup control.

All this gives me the net impression that when MemoQ is adding features, then it goes deeply into it. Very good!

Mike
