Greetings,
I have been asked by a client to translate a series of digital photos. Those photos were taken at a workshop and consist of mainly bullet points. It seems to be photos of group reports.
Any idea how much should I charge for this kind of job?

When I've been in this situation and unable to do a source word count, I charge per target word. My clients never have any difficulties with this.
I'm not sure if there is a way of doing a word count on scanned docs which can't be converted to Word, but maybe you'll get a technical whizz along soon who might tell you how to do it.

2. Translate the text as normal
3. Take photos of your translation, and deliver to client (no, just kidding)

Flip charts are too large to fit on a scanner or a copier. They are photographed for archiving purposes.
As long as they are not illegible beyond belief, I am actually not sure why the translation should require special rates. We receive scans, PDFs and faxes all the time. Why does it have to be typed first?

Only if your client want your translation in the original format. (kidding)
Well, you can charge by the hour. Dealing with text in photoes is not easy and sometimes takes much longer than you would expect.

That's true. I did not think of flip charts and such things.
As well, I agree that the rates should not need to particular to photographed documents as opposed to any other non-editable format.

Recognise the files using any OCR software (late versions of FineReafer cope well with camera photos in JPG). Then count the source chars. Otherwise count the target. Add some per-hour charge for this technical work.
