how do you price slogans?

Hello all,

I am curious as to whether there is a general consensus on how to approach the pricing of slogans in translation. Do most of you charge by the slogan? By the hour whenever research is necessary? By the word at higher rates?

Any ideas as to where I can find info on the going rates for this specific type of assignment will be much appreciated.

I don't normally charge for slogans. If a slogan is part of a larger job, for example the title of a brochure, I charge for the brochure and the slogan is charged for purely on a per line or word basis. In other words, thinking up a slogan is an integral but unquantifiable part of the work, like research. The slogan is of course only adequate within the context of the job; the customer can't expect, for example, to be able to lift the slogan out of the brochure and use it in a TV ad campaign.

If a customer asks for a slogan in isolation, I do it for free, as a service, for good good customers, and I refuse to do it at all for others.

I don't do much in the way of publicity work, and what I do is for a specialist readership and not the general public, so I can afford to take this approach. If I specialized in advertising material, I would charge separately for slogans. I would probably give the customer a choice of several, and expect payment for two or three hours of my time if they adopted one of them, and nothing if they didn't. But this is purely hypothetical.
