Could any give me any clarification on my UK tax liability in regard to taking a freelance position with an Italian organisation. I will be doing the work remotely in the UK and paid in Euros by the Italian charity. I am registered as self employed and I really need to know what the Italian company’s tax liability is and if I am required to pay taxes in both the UK and Italy.

Double taxation agreements Aug 3, 2009

Hi "K"

Very briefly, if you are registered as self-employed in the UK, you only pay taxes in the UK. EU countries and many others have agreements to avoid double payment.

The Italian taxes are really a matter for the charity to obtain advice on from their commercialista but if they unfamiliar with this area you may need to give them chapter and verse on the agreements to stop them deducting tax at source.

I could provide you with details of how I word this on my invoices if it would be of help.
Ask me here or contact me through my profile.
Good luck.

Russell

Thank you very much for your reply. It would be really helpful to know what you put on your invoices. It is a very small charity with no previous experience of working outside Italy. My main contact has already indicated that they would probably handle it as if I were an employee which would mean taking out taxes at source.
