I just had to laugh when I received this email from an agency I apparantly registered with several years ago. And there was I thinking I'd seen it all!

"... While we were investigating the contents of our database of freelance
translators, we found out that you have not done any translation work for us
since then [since date of registration].

We are offering you the possibility to find out why this could be the case.
Indeed, we have developed a YYYY tool which will
quickly tell you how to improve your chances of getting a job from us.

We are offering this service to you for a very modest fee of EUR 15 (+21% of
VAT if applicable)".

Ha ha, what a joke. Thanks for giving me a good laugh.

I received the same email a couple of weeks ago and also nearly choked on my morning coffee because I was laughing so hard. What next, I wonder?

$1 for each vowel Aug 23, 2009

Charging $1 for vowels in translation.

Edit: Is it not a creative ripoff? I could open a translation agency.

But you may ask WHY? Well, vowels are expensive... you can't articulate words nicely without them. The air just won't stream through the articulatory channel without them. So they are worth it. There you go.

I received the same email from this Belgian agency on 21/08.

I asked them politely to remove me from their database and confirm it had been done. Fair enough, I've since received the confirmation.

In the past, they've also tried to get another amount out of translators (I think it was EUR 50) on the basis that you send them your CV and they forward it to 3,000 agencies worldwide.

And yet, they have a perfect rating on Blue Board.

I may be wrong, but my usually accurate radar says 'thanks, but no thanks'.

Save your money Aug 23, 2009

I will save you the 15 euros (plus 21% tax):

Dear Sir or Madam:

The reason we "have not done any translation work for you" is because we are busy doing work for our own clients at 3x to 4x what you are offering to pay.

However, for a very limited time, we are offering you the possibility to find out why this could be the case. Indeed, if you would like to increase your chances of obtaining clients who pay more (and will therefore allow you to afford our services), you can obtain a full report from us for a very modest fee of EUR 1000 (+21% of VAT if applicable)".

Have a nice day.

Voluntary work (sold in the future) Aug 24, 2009

Actually, many of you have offered free services over the years for many "organizations" - these were agencies posing as organizations. You created free glossaries, translation memories, tables, and you also provide your services free to Proz.com through the kudoz system. Any agency can now copy-paste your entries and sell them as a "specialized glossary" to other translators.

All translations, memories, kudoz etc you have provided for free in the past will be sold to you and to other colleagues in the future.

Use your imagination to figure out what other free services that you provided will be sold in the future or are already for sale.

To give you an example, I recently found in the TM of an agency many entries which originated from voluntary work for a "non-for profit" institution in 25 languages 2 years ago. The translators worked for free, the agency sold the project at a low price (they charged "formatting and typesetting" to the charity), the TM can only be accessed online, and the agency is using trados matches to discount the translators' invoices.

Keep volunteering...

Doesn't sound like a serious agency, despite the 5/5 blue board rating.

Don't know how many takers they'll get, but if they can get away with this, then maybe we should start charging each time we pass our CVs to an agency, say 50 eur per CV? Sounds fair to me!

Everyone who got an email from this agency should use this as a template - let's see how they like it!
