Can anyone give me an current average rate for Arabic to English per word or 1000 words? I have seen from 10 to 15 pence per word...and even up to 20 pence...

Many thanks to all in advance

Greetings.

Perhaps a more-useful and reasonable method than using an unreliable and variable -- due to different word-counts in both L1 and L2 -- "per word basis" to determine a quote for a translation project is "activity-based costing," [ABC] a method adapted from systems engineering.

Under ABC, you first examine the L1 source document or a number of sample pages [if they are at hand] and determine the familiarity of the subject and layout features of the document (which features you may have to replicate in your production). After that assessment, determine the time you would require to do any necessary background research on the subject and then the time for translation and formatting. Charge per page or per hour.

A "per word" basis for budget decisions and quotes is effectively akin to [1] an architect's charging for building a house based on the number of bricks, boards, electrical wiring, and nails needed, [2] a lawyer's charging on the basis of how many words he or she writes in a legal brief, rather than the quality and legal soundness of the contents of the brief itself.

Hope this helps.
