Hello,

I'd like to know what kind of personal property insurance are other US freelancers buying. Particularly, those who work from home. Since business items aren't covered under a regular renter's insurance, do you buy a separate policy? If so, what kind?

I got a quote by two insurance companies, and both policies combined aren't exactly cheap, specially considering how cheap renter's insurance is. Also, even the most simple business insurance policy is really targeted to other businesses. Is there any company that has a policy designed for people with home offices, something that would include personal and business property?

Thanks,

Claudia

never thought about this... Oct 22, 2009

Claudia,

I've always assumed that my homeowner's policy would cover the loss of the computer or printer in case of fire or a burglary. Maybe I'm an exception, but my only work-related equipment consists of a printer/scanner, a laptop, and my old monitor. All together they aren't worth $1000. So, if it were true that the insurance policy wouldn't cover the loss, I'm not sure it would pay off to insure them on some other kind of policy unless the cost was very, very low.

Thanks for your reply Patricia. From what I know, business equipment isn't consider personal property and it's not covered by renter's or homeowner's insurance. But like you, I wouldn't pay extra for business insurance if the value of the equipment were less than $1000.
