Hello everyone,

I'm asked to indicate my best rates for a job application with an American company. Never having come across this term before, I am lost in potential ambigious meaning: Best rates for whom exactly? For the company, i.e. my minimum rate? For myself, i.e. my highest rate (unlikely, I know)? Or my middle rate?

Thanks for any help in clarifying this!

Best, Dennis

Unfortunately not your best rate Apr 6, 2010

Hi Dennis,

Basically they are asking for your lowest rate. Your best rate would be indeed your highest rate.icon_wink.gif

Livia

Yes, that´s it. The best for them, actually your lowest one.

I think both sides should be satisfied Apr 6, 2010

When you deal with the client for the job, I think you have always to have in consideration that both sides should be satisfied, otherwise the failures are very likely to happen.

Best Regards,

When I'm asked for my "best rates" I simply walk away.

Show me a project details, provide a sample and ask me how much I will charge you for it. That's it.

"Best rates" - my ar...mpit.

I just have rates Apr 6, 2010

If you ask for my best rates, that's what you get. If you ask for my worst rates, same thing. I can even provide my average rates without breaking a sweaticon_wink.gif.

Don't agree Apr 6, 2010

No, I don't believe the thread opener claiming he has never come across this term before

icon_smile.gif

Nice joke and yes, a quite annoying term. Give them the best rate for

a) you
b) the quality they want to deliver to their end client therefore
c) and the rate being the best price for assuring the future business of both as concequence

please note: b) = c) = a)

The rate that skips negotiation Apr 6, 2010

It is similar to a "best offer". It is the last offer that is given in a series of offers during a negotiation. By asking for your best rate, the agency is asking for a rate that assumes no further negotiation. It is not necessarily the best rate for you, and is usually the best rate for them.

Disagree Apr 6, 2010

I disagree a little with the above: my best offer is the lowest rate I am willing to work for (I am happy to get more, but I am aware of market forces - and my lowest rate is NOT one that comes even close to undercutting the market). That is what I would quote; if they don't like it, they can go and find the monkeys that take peanuts.

It is a very useful term Apr 6, 2010

I find the term very useful. 'Best rate' - two short words that tell you all you need to know about the buyer.

I wonder Apr 6, 2010

if the outsourcer has ever been asked what their best payment deadline is.
