Hello,

Well, I know this subject is a never ending topic : )

A Korean agency has asked me for a rate (US$ per min., I assume)
for subtitling Korean TV dramas and TV shows (quiz shows etc.)
And of course, they want a good rate, since the amount will be
constant "400 hours per year, 30-35 hours per month,8-10 hours per week."
(I know there will be other subtitlers so I won't be receiving 8-10 hrs per week)
BTW, I still don't buy the logic of volume discount unless it is huge.

Their conditions are:
- there will be no script provided
- they will provide a software and cueing would be done for me already
so apparently, I only have to fill in the words within the time code.

I read tons of posts and rates seems to vary from
$5 per minute (best) to $1.5 per minute (still considered good, rate by SDI, a company in LA that does a lot of Hollywood movies)

Points to consider:
- no script means it involves transcriptions
- Korean TV dramas barely have silence and I can assume there will be a lot of dialogue.
- My prediction is that they won't accept $5 per minute since that is considered to be a good rate
in US/Europe and this is a Korean company.

Any Korean to English subtitlers out there?
Would appreciate your input.

I saw someone's post saying $5/min is too low for film rate. Unfortunately, that is the reality,
I suppose.

==================================
An average movie is 100 min long.
USD 5.00/running minute is already a low rate.

This already makes USD 500 / movie.
A running minute equals to 17 subtitles on average.
A subtitle contains 1 to 20 words (i.e. 10 on average).
That makes 170 words/ minute * 100 minutes = 17,000 words.
USD 0.029/word.
