Hello,

do you have any idea of how much should I charge daily/monthly for a testing on-site assignment? Since the working day will be of about 6 hours I was thinking of 300 EUR per day (6000 EUR per month) plus something for the travel since the place I will go is 1 hour from where I live. By the way, how much do you think I should charge for the travel time and gas?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Monica

Your daily/monthly rates are totally up to you. However, it is fair that you expect to be reimbursed for gas plus wear and tear on your private car. In the US many private companies use US Government rates as guidelines. You can find them at http://www.gsa.gov/portal/content/100715. Maybe you can find similar guidelines prepared by the German government.

As to travelling time, which is 2 hrs/day in your case, I suggest not to negotiate it separately if you will be working for a month or more (or a minimum committment that is acceptable for you). Instead negotiate a lump sum. But if the project is only for a few hours/days and will be calculated on an hourly base, then start your clock when you leave home and stop it when you arrive at night. Or simply increase you daily rate accordingly).

Hope this helps.

seems about right Jan 13, 2011

Hi Monica,

As an individual these kind of amounts can make you very happy, I did the same for almost 2,5 years - - - it makes it easier for the client to add another month to you assignment.
On the other hand you are probably cheaper or about the same as an external secretary.....

Normally time and travel is included in your hourly fee - but if the client is willing to pay for it - why not !
You can always add the cost for public transport to and from work as a surcharge.

Have fun

Ed

PS: you also need to make sure you will still be able to handle requests from your current clients - otherwise you'll have none left after a couple of months.....

300 EUR a day is probably about what I would ask for in a similar case, except that I wouldn't expect any company to actually pay that rate. I hate full-time on-site jobs, so that's fine by me.

But... do secretaries make 6,000 EUR/month, plus travel expenses? I seriously doubt it, even if we are talking about "freelance" secretaries contracted for a few months like you seem to suggest, if such a thing exists.

Yes they do exist (at least in Western Europe) Jan 13, 2011

I was working for almost 2,5 years for a large utilities company for a bit higher rate here (in the Netherlands) and the secretary who was working onsite via an external (IT) company, COST more money than I did, (of course since she is working for another company and wasn't a freelancer, so she did not actually MAKE that amount....

What I'm saying at 40-50 euro you are still one of the cheapest external people in the company (which can either be a good or a bad thing)
