Although this e-book does not specifically address the translation industry and not all of the proposed steps are feasible to implement in regards to our business, translators seeking advice on how to price their professional services can certainly benefit from this information.

Solve an Unrecognized Problem and offer an Unanticipated Solution Mar 16, 2011

Hi Renate,

Many thanks for posting this link.

Personally, I found one nugget for translators in Tom Snyder's contribution For those of us Creating Value During the Sales Process.

I'm not sure whether I'm allowed to quote him on this website, but his true words of wisdom are:

"At its simplest, what these customers [customers who didn't select the cheapest provider, when apparently the only differentiator was price] reported receiving was insight that made them a better business. That is, these customers were willing to pay a premium when:
1. The seller revealed to the buyer an Unrecognized Problem that the buyer or the buyer’s organization was experiencing.
2. The seller established for the buyer an Unanticipated Solution to the problems that the buyer or the buyer’s organization was experiencing."

Those who don't have time to read it all should at least read what Tom Snyder has to say and should read LSP/translator where he writes seller.

Cheers,
Gerard

glad you found it useful Mar 17, 2011

Gerard,

It's great that you took the time to read the report. There is lots of useful information on what to do and what not to do when it comes to developing a pricing strategy. Although this report is not directly geared towards translation, there is much to take away from it for anyone involved in pricing negotiations. Especially, the advice on "pricing with confidence" is really something that many freelancers need to get their minds around. At the same time, it is so important to implement many of these strategies, such as creating true value for clients and building solid relationships.

In my opinion, a report truly worth reading!
