What's a Clearance Code?

I have just received an e-mail from a client in another country saying that they wish to pay me for some work I did and, as the bank charges to pay to my Brazilian account are outrageous they suggested paying into my UK account at a major UK bank.

The problem is that they have been told that, in addition to the usual information such as the IBAN, SWIFT BIC, Sort Code, Account Number and the like, they need a Clearance Code. I have never heard of a Clearance Code, and would like to know what it is, and how I can get this code and inform the client, so I can be paid. I can only imagine it is the sort code - or am I wrong?

The problem is the bank promises to respond only after 5 working days, and I need a reply urgently as the client wants to pay me.

Thanks Apr 3, 2011

Thanks so much. I'm a bit surprised that the bank wants this, as I have informed the sort code and also the IBAN (which contains the bank code and branch number within the string), and even the name of the bank and branch.

In any case, I have told the client the number again, this time as "clearing code" rather than "sort code", hopefully things shall be OK now.

Muito obrigado,

PAUL
