Hello,

A customer has asked me to translate some pages of literature references of a book. My problem is how much to charge them because I won't have to translate hardly anything but it will take time to find the reports that are translated into Spanish (they have asked me to).

What would you do?

Thank you!

rates as in literature Apr 19, 2011

Hi Luka,

I work basically as a ficction and non fiction books translator and sometimes, when translating essays, I also have to "translate" the bibliography. This means, first of all, to do a search in the Spanish ISBN in order to understand if the works are translated to Spanish and, if so, incorporate the reference to the bibliography.
Usually, the publishing houses consider that as part of the book and, in consequence, they pay this kind of work at the same rate... usually a lot less than technical translations, at least here in Spain.
Rates in the literature world have nothing to do with the standard rate per word applied to technical translations and go from 10 to 12 euros per 1800 or 2100 characters with spaces.
Please let mw know if you need furhter information.

I would charge on an hourly basis.
