The word is out: Translators will bid on any job! Thread poster: Ursula Peter-Czichi

Today another call for translators to fill a database with lots of responses. Did anyone of the bidders look at the web site: http://www.xpert.tk Aside from many mistakes, you will find \'Usefull Contacts\' on this site.
Did anyone see the page with his pricing (0.7 to 0.10 Euros (1 Euro = 0.8 - 0.9 US$), more for special projects)? How much do you think you will be paid?? Did you ... Indiscriminate bidding on just any job is bad for our profession.
Does anyone have an idea how to prevent this depressing type of business?
(This topic is very much related to Ed\'s contribution yesterday: \"Can we ban \'russianliguist.com\'\". Why wait until it is too late to ban those \'outsourcers\'?)

Stephen Franke United States Local time: 07:27 English to Arabic + ... Not all translators will bid on such losers | Apr 12, 2002 |
Greetings / herzliche Gruesse aus Los Angeles!
May one observe that not all translators would bid reflexively on posts by dubious (\"flakes and shakes\") firms that offer such low rates.
They want cheap work; they get what they deserve, but that may not be the product the customer wanted or deserved.
Another irritants include:
o \"Urgent! need translator in X language RIGHT NOW!\" posts

They want cheap work; they get what they deserve, but that may not be the product the customer wanted or deserved.
Another irritants include:
o \"Urgent! need translator in X language RIGHT NOW!\" posts
o \"sample text\" items that appear to be parts of a paid job
o inability of posting firms to clarify if their operating systems support complex scripts and right-to-left languages, such as Arabic, Hebrew, Farsi, Kurdish, Pashto, etc.
HTH.
Regards from Los Angeles,
Stephen H. Franke

I\'d qualify Ursula\'s statement by adding quotation marks to the word \"translators\".
Translators will not chase after every single job, but \"translators\" will. | | |
"Yougottabekidding" kind of job | Apr 12, 2002 |
Here is an example of the kind of posting Stephen commented on, about people yelling for translators to do a job right now:
http://www.proz.com/job?id=20771
Several nice things about this: a) the wordcount (1400 words); b) the deadline (today at 3:30 pm EDT); c) it is in hard copy; d) they want a sample!; e) last but not least, the rate they offer (US$ 0.06).

They should pay us for the time we waste in reading this stuff.

For the fun of it and to get rid of some frustration, I typed the above name into my browser.
To my surprise, I got a result!
There was a real website by that name [Under Construction]. The domain name is registered with Network Solutions (VeriSign).
