Good morning,
I am a Spanish freelance translator and a potential client has asked me if I could provide an IRS W-9 with my invoice. What does that mean? In Spain I do have to pay taxes for being "freelance" and I have a tax number, is that enough?
I am a bit confused with foreign taxation systems :S
Thank you!

Hola,
¡Muchas gracias!

W8-BEN Jun 8, 2012

You need to provide them with a completed W8-BEN form, not a W9.

The W8-BEN is available at http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw8ben.pdf.

The W8-BEN form provides the client with proof for the IRS that you are not a US taxpayer and therefore they are not required to withhold income taxes from the amounts they pay you. It is a necessary formality.

The W9 is only for taxpayers within the US.

Correct URL Jun 8, 2012

The correct URL is http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-utl/formw8benindividualexecirculation2.pdf

There seems to have been a recent update of the form.
