New book tax in Mexico?

For years I've been ordering books from the US and Germany and never paid a penny in import taxes. Today, I got a rude shock: my dictionaries arrived from Germany. Total value: 360 euros ($435). Tax: 870 pesos ($75) or a 17% percent tax.

While I realize my beloved Mexico is not quite perfect, this is going too far. Does anyone know if a new import tax on books has been imposed?

Cheers, Kim

Nooooo! Sep 21, 2004

Hi, Kim,

No new taxes have been imposed so far, albeit the heated debate over this issue in the last year or so. I do know that shipping packages doesn't cause taxes either (as in using DHL, UPS, etc.), so I'm as puzzled as you!

Regards,
Atenea

Thank you for your prompt reply, Atenea. So I guess the next step is to file a complaint with Servicio Postal Mexicano? Lord hep me!

In case you need some documented evidence, this looks like the right place: http://www.economia-snci.gob.mx/sic_sistemas/siavi/genera.php?fraccion=49019906# (which covers books not in Spanish); click on "Historia arancelaria."
