I'm a norwegian translator with 4 years part time experience from a religious magazine in Norway. I translated mostly from english to norwegian, and I didn't charge them because I'm from the same community.

I moved to canada in january and i'm thinking of starting as a freelance translator. I sent out some emails to agencies in UK, Canada and US, and a couple of them want to know my rates. I'm not sure how to bill them because some agencies ask for rate per word and some per hour.

If somebody could suggest rates on (per word/hour):
- translation
- proofreading
- editing
- wordprocessing

I know it's hard to give estimates because it often depends on the subject matter, difficulty, and delivery times, but if someone could give me rough ideas of what "normal" rates are then it would be easier for me to deal with these agencies.

Also, after completing a job, how can you make sure that you'll get paid for your translation (specially if the agency is located in a different country)

One way of finding out is to inquire their end-prices. Some agencies even have a form on ther website, which calculates the final price. Then you can guess, what will be the rate they would pay to translators.
There are statistics with input by translators, but can they be trusted?
You could also look at the job section of Proz.com for your language combination and look, what they are offering. Than you know the lower limit for your rates.
