A friend of mine posted this link on Facebook, which could be interesting for freelancers starting up in Spain who may not yet be earning enough to pay the monthly SS quota of 250+ euros.

Great info Neil, thanks. Jan 14, 2014

Another option which I'm about to start using is to open/close your tax position with Hacienda (alta/baja) at the end of the month.

You need to apply for a digital signature with them first and download it to your computer, then you can basically open/close your tax position as you please from your computer in the first 6 working days of the month for that month.

This way you can close the tax position and avoid having to pay welfare and your accountant until you've accumulated enough work to make opening the tax position and invoicing worthwhile. I'm setting this limit at €2.000/month and will decide whether to be alta or baja at the end of each month.

Health care will obviously be a bit on/off but it sounds like a good solution if you're not working much and/or translating part time.

Welfare contributions after 47 years of age is min. €276/month. It increases as you get older.
All the best.
Jo
