Hello all,

I have a project of 10 DVDs, that need to be transripted, then translated then voice recorded. Each DVD is 75 minutes long and it produces about 25 pages of text.

How much do you think would be the reasonable rates? Knowing that it might take up to three months of work.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Regards to all

Transcribing audio is very difficult since you have to consider the quality of the track, accent issues, ambient noise, and a thousand other things (can you see the speaker's lips? Do you know the content's subject?, etc. etc.).

A good idea is to offer them your target price per hour and offer to do one DVD. You can then easily time yourself and, provided that the rest of the material is similar, give them a total definite quotation on the price and time needed to do the remaining 9.

In this way you can rest assured that, if the material turns out to be a nightmare, you won't end up working long hours for peanuts. On the other hand, the client will know beforehand the price for the other 9, so he won't feel that you are overbilling him at the end of the project (which is an understandable fear).

Another strong point for this approach is that you will naturally invoice them for the first DVD up front, finding out soon (at least before half of the remaining 9 dvds are done) their payment practices!

Hi Tamara,
I'll give you the *averages* in England so you have an idea:

Transcription = per hour = ~£30
Translated = per word = ~£0.08
Voice Recording = per hour = ~£90

Given that it's a big job and if you are doing everything, you could round down the final sum.

Hope this helps!
Grace.
