Hello everybody!

I have recently been contacted by a Romanian publisher's house, interested in a collaboration in the medical field - translation of books from English into Romanian. Their minimum gross rate is 12 RON for 2,000 signs without spaces. 12 RON equals 2.71 EUR, while 2,000 characters without spaces roughly equals 400 words. Doing further maths is obviously pointless.

I rejected the job, but the rate offered is common in Romania.

What about your countries?

I have recently switched to the medical field, but what I have translated so far has proven quite good, according to the feedback received. I was recommended to this publisher's house by one of my former clients.

In my country (Thailand, not in EU) and many countries, translation rate is declining. My personal explanation is easier access due to progress of Internet. Translators as bidder dump prices and customers gain more since "supply is growing larger than demand."
I am arranging with the Translators and Interpreters Association of Thailand to support the price level but I met with a new bottleneck: harassment from stakeholders through social media.

I don't know if this will answer your question, but here on Proz under Tools -> Community rates you will find (maybe) an indication.

Succes

Community rates versus domestic market Jul 18, 2015

Robert, I know what proz's community rates for my language pairs are. However, the Romanian domestic market does not give a rusty dime.

I absolutely agree with you on this. I am myself from "those" domestic markets. And even if I live elswhere, my clients back in my home country equally don't give a dime to the community rates or wahtsoever. More, they deem not care whether it is a specialized field either.
