Hello,

An Indian transcription/translation agency offers me to transcript many hours of recorded audio (FR to FR/ French to French) and asked me my rate per minute of audio and per hour (in USD).

I am looking for the average transcription rates on the market to align my rates.(FR to FR + ENGLISH to FR + ENGLISH to ENGLISH).

Any link/document or data?

Regards,

An Indian agency will pay rock-bottom rates. Expect to be shocked.

Agreed. Unlikely to be worth even a small fraction of your time.

Not worth it Nov 28, 2017

I wouldn't even turn on my PC.
In addition to rock-bottom rates which the colleagues mentioned above, their work practices and ethics is generally horrible. You won't like working with them anyway.

See French discussion ... Nov 29, 2017

I followed the French discussion until it took its bizarre twist, but in general ...

Call transcriptionists (or in this case a transcription agency, because the deadline would be impossible otherwise) and ask how much they charge. Hire one of them and add your markup to their fee or refer the client directly to them. (If you do the work for that rate, you will end up with horrible hourly earnings and produce an inferior product.)

Over 99.9% of translators cannot do this job well at a reasonable pace. It's like hiring a plumber to paint your living room. And I would never work with this agency: not just because they are apparently deadbeats, but any agency so incompetent that they did not think to hire a transcriptionist for a transcription can't be too good at their business in general.

Doing a project that involves a little transcription or is based on translating from an audio file can make perfect sense for a translator. There are even translators who can translate directly from the audio (personally I would have to transcribe the original and then translate it). Doing a pure transcription project makes no sense.

I wouldn't recommend it! Nov 29, 2017

Their offer sounds very much like one I took as a newbie - it wasn't paid well and I had to wait several months to be paid! It took several e-mails and attempts - in the end, they transferred the anyway small sum in the wrong currency, which meant another loss for me...
