I checked Proz.com forums and found out that 3 US dollars/minute is a fairly common rate for beginniers in subtitling. I know that I will have to spend a lot of time to subtitle, but it will be a good experience. Therefore I proposed 3 euros/minute to the agency. I hope it's not too low, but because they still didn't give me any details about the length of the video and topic, I can't really quote precisely. I don't want to quote too high (like 4 or 5 euros/minute), since I would like to do this job. What are the average subtitling and dubbing rates into French (from English) on the market in 2018 please? For dubbing, any specific things to know, and which software to use for dubbing please?

The reality of the market is that 3€/min is what most agencies offer. The reality of the cost of life indicates however that these agencies are driving sweatshops and should be shut down. I don't know how many minutes of subtitling you would get with this agency, or how many minutes you can produce in a given month, but I don't think you're going to get 600 minutes every month, always in a neat, timely fashion. Even if you did, I'm not sure you could handle 600 minutes of su... See more The reality of the market is that 3€/min is what most agencies offer. Even if you did, I'm not sure you could handle 600 minutes of subtitles per month. So right now, at this price, you're looking at *mayyyyyybe* minimum wage, if every planet aligns perfectly. I would refuse that offer. I've been refusing offers for a while... ▲ Collapse | | | Dietlinde DuPlessis (X) United States Local time: 11:09 English to German + ... Maybe you can subtitle 20 minutes a day. Maybe, depending on your speed and experience and the video in question, you can do 40 minutes a day. You can see yourself where that leaves you... It is a whole different field that takes a lot of training (training! not practice as in trial and error), software that costs thousands and some good skills. I think the dubbing rates are more like 12 or 15 or more USD per minute. ▲ Collapse | | | Can't speak for dubbing | Nov 2, 2018 |
But for subtitling, do not accept those rates. The problem with foreign clients is that, since you are a freelancer, they propose the cheapest rates possible and those keep plummeting because people accept them (and the industy as a whole isn't restrained by any law to pay subtitlers decently). A decent "minimum of the minimum" would be something like 6-8€ per minute, but you will rarely see something that exceeds 4$ per minute. That is why I would say, stick to 4-5$ per minute, a... It would be nice if we could reject low prices, but unfortunately, it doesn't pay the rent (and they know that). However, since you are French, I would advise to find yourself a French subtitling agency. It is hard to get in one (still trying, personally), but there actually are laws in France protecting translators, which means better rates and deadlines. ▲ Collapse | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Subtitling and Dubbing rates Anycount & Translation Office 3000 | Translation Office 3000
