I am a translator English-German into Spanish and normally work with rates based on words.
As the method for charging in Germany or Austria sometimes is different, I would like to have a clue how much could I charge in those cases.

Thanks in advance!
Magdalena

Calculation Nov 24, 2005

Hi Magdalena,

if you want to have an estimate for the Zeilenpreis, you can calculate as follows:

your word rate X 200 = page rate (estimate)

page rate / 25 = line rate

Happy calculations!

Fabio

It´d be useful to use the "Forum search" function Nov 24, 2005

Hola Magdalena

This issue has been discussed thousand of times! If you enter the expression "pro Zeile" in the Forum Search function, you´ll get dozens of threads about this topic.

Personally, I charge between 0.80 - 1.00 Euro per line (original text), although this depends on font size, difficulty etc.

I hope this helps!

Buena suerte

thanks to you both for the information. I did search in the German forum and I just found one discussion (not much). I guess in the english forum there will be more.
Thanks again!

Definition of Standardzeile Nov 24, 2005

The price for a Standardzeile does not depend on font size, but simply on the definition of a Standardzeile. The BDÜ defines one Standardzeile as 55 keystrokes, but I have also seen definitions of 50 or 60 keystrokes. Check back with your client what their definition is.

For translations with German source text this calculation was introduced because some German terms are really long and it would not be fair to count one German term "per word" when it actually translates into several words in the target language.

Good luck,
Stefanie

The standard price Nov 24, 2005

as on today is around €0.65 - €1.50 per line comprising 55 strokes including spaces and symbols. This is generally popular in Germany. Your may have to assess the grade of difficulty or any further pre-processing and post-processing work involved, because not all source documents are translator friendly. Some times it is like Mission Impossible.Good luck Brandis

Mainly 55 characters, BUT Nov 25, 2005

It does for me, since I mainly translate powers of attorney (Vollmächte) I get faxed, so I use the traditional method of counting the lines or charging per page...

But otherwise you´re entirely right, Stefanie, the standard line is 55 characters.

Regards

Cid
