IMO, if you think that that training will be useful to you in other respects, then you should not expect payment for it. You do do continuous education, don't you? You don't expect colleges or universities where you study part-time courses, to pay you for your time, do you? The valuable time lost which could have been spent on profitable work, is off-set by the value you get from the training.
