How do you charge transcriptions?

per minute?

Do you charge the translation separately?

Or, do you offer a "combo" rate?

Thanks.

Note: We work on this area and lately, some outsourcers are telling us that we are rather expensive.

Transcriptions take a lot of time, generally

Charge separately Jan 8, 2008

Normally I charge for the transcrpition (per hour) and then charge for the translation (per word) - the way I see it, they are two entirely different tasks, and should be charged as such. At the last company where I worked as a Project Manager, we had native speakers to do the transcription and then another native speaker to translate the transcribed text, so obviously we had to charge for both activities as we were paying different individuals for each job.

Hope this helps!

It's a field I leave to specialists Jan 8, 2008

but for what it's worth, I can share some observations.

As a one-time conference worker, I also did transcriptions once and payment was computed by the hour. However (the reason I'm leaving this to specialists now), there have been great technical advancements in the field permitting far greater productivity than the pedal-operated tape recorders we used to work with. One of them is computerized stenography, as is now used in court, permitting practically simultaneous transcription.

I believe in this regard (i.e., in court) the rates are regulated; at least, this was my experience in Canada, where I worked together with a freelance stenographer (she was also paid by the hour, but since we were travelling, hers was a flat day rate).

TOPIC STARTER
To Parrot and to Paul Jan 8, 2008

We use a software with pedals: Scriber.

In our Team, there's a transcriber that works for the National Congress.

Paul, when you say per hour, do you mean by the file hour or by the time the transcritpion takes you? !

I charge per minute of the wav file.

Yes, in court they are regulated.

Thanks to both.
