Hello,

Does anyone know if there are any bilingual children's books (e.g. German and Spanish)?
Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

Best regards,

Tanja

For which age? Nov 22, 2004

Hi Tanja

For which age are you thinking of? I don't know about bilingual books but might have ideas for the youngest.

A few suggestions (from the UK) Nov 22, 2004

Hello Tanja,
Unfortunately, I don't know of any German-Spanish bilingual books for children, but I do know of a couple of places that may be able to point you in the right direction.
I used to work for a wonderful children's book club near where I live in London, UK, and they sold bilingual books; English was always one of the languages involved and most of the books were in "community languages" (Chinese, Turkish, Albanian, Somali, etc.). They may be able to help you, however, as they specialise in such books:
www.letterboxlibrary.com
You can also try www.grantandcutler.com which is the UK's best foreign language bookshop. They also sell books/dictionary/resources where English if neither the target nor the source language.
I suppose you could also try www.amazon.de if you really require just German-Spanish books.
Good luck,
Aisha

For a boy of about 4 years. It would also be helpful to know if there are any publishing houses which issue the same stories in different languages.

Thanks.

ideas Nov 22, 2004

I used to look for bilingual stories too (French and Spanish) but I could find only a few titles.

But then I noticed that as I read them to my children while they didn't know reading yet, I could translate them as if I was doing interpretation. I thought of writing them but never did.
I used to speak only Spanish with my children, but the moment of reading was different, the story was allowed in two languages, and they could learn new vocabulary in both languages at the same time.

You can find classics in any language, but it's not sure that they'll be the exact translation of the version you have in one of the languages.

Later, when I was teaching Spanish for foreigners in France, I could find bilingual books but not for little children.
I think that the market (unless you want a pair with English) will be disappointing anyway.

One anecdote:
My eldest was learning reading and had to read a short story at home. In one page there was a drawing of a little girl buying a piece of bread. She was trying to read the single sentence that described the drawing and her youngest sister could finish the sentence before the eldest could read it. She was upset and said "How does she know what's written, she doesn't know reading", and it was just because she had looked at the drawing while the other one was trying to decipher the letters.
We often reason thinking language= written code, and it's not always necessary, even if we're talking of books.

Good luck

Claudia

Look for books of Richard Scarry Nov 23, 2004

Like this one:

You will easily find the same in the two languages, they have been translated. I have the same in French and in Dutch, and my sons (now 11 and 9) liked them very much. It's perfect for 4 years old.
