I will be going to Warsaw soon to teach English, and would like to learn Polish. I am not in a position to follow a taught course, so I want to learn from a self-taught course in book and audio format. I don't just want phrases for simple conversation but grammar as well, at a level suitable for a beginner with reasonably wide experience of learning varied languages. Having used a number of the courses in the Colloquial series, I can really recommend them. They are usually well laid out, fairly details and normally present the language as it is spoken today (not always the case with the Hugo books unfortunately.) They seem to be about as entertaining as language courses can be. Colloquial Polish by Boleslaw W. Mazur is available from online booksellers in the UK and seems to get good user reviews.
