While browsing the Internet for information about the exponential function, I came across this website:

http://www.albartlett.org/presentations/arithmetic_population_energy_video1.html

A lot of you have probably already heard of Professor Al Bartlett and his celebrated lecture: Arithmetic, Population and Energy

I, for one, had not heard of it before and since I found it very interesting (and slightly disturbing) I thought I would post the link here.

Maybe we can kick off a discussion about his arguments.
I find this topic very interesting.

[ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Bartlett Bartlett is a modern-day Malthusian. ... Professor Bartlett often explains how sustainable growth is an oxymoron. He ... promotes sustainable living. ]

Hello Lutz. Is it something like 'The Limits to Growth'? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Limits_to_Growth The Limits to Growth is a 1972 book modeling the consequences of a rapidly growing world population and finite resource supplies ... We have had an interesting time translating 'sustainability' in the Chinese Community as the 'growth paradigm' of a developing country meets a Western 'environmentalist' one. (At least that is my take on it) Lesley

Hello again Lutz.
1 Perhaps you might be interested in the course outline from a book for secondary school geography students in China in 1984. I guess these are all key issues for many countries.
2 From a recent article, it appears that China may be relaxing its family-planning policies in certain regions which have an aging population.
