LONDON (Reuters) - A former translator at Britain's top secret global
eavesdropping centre has been charged with breaking the Official Secrets
Act.

Katharine Teresa Gun, 29, was arrested in March at a time when reports were
circulating that a top secret memo from the U.S. National Security Agency
had been leaked to a newspaper.

She was formally charged on Thursday with breaking the secrets law on
security and intelligence leaks and released on bail to appear at London's
Bow Street Magistrates' Court on November 27.

Gun later issued a statement through civil rights lawyers Liberty saying
any disclosures she made were justified because "they exposed serious
illegality and wrongdoing on the part of the U.S. government who attempted
to subvert our own security services and to prevent widescale death and
casualties among ordinary Iraqi people and UK forces in the course of an
illegal war," she said.

"I have only ever followed my conscience."

A spokesman for Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) in Cheltenham
confirmed that Gun had been a GCHQ employee at the time of her arrest, but
said she had been sacked shortly afterwards.

"She was dismissed in June after an internal investigation," he told
Reuters by telephone. He declined further comment.
