Dear Translators,

There are 86,800 words in the archive of this link. They are ranked in order of commonality. Each word is scaled to reflect its frequency (relative to the words that precede and follow it).

The data comes from the British National Corpus, which is a collection of samples of written and spoken language from a wide range of sources, designed to represent an accurate cross-section of current English usage.

Tracking the way a language is used tells us a lot about the culture; to illustrate, The rank of "love" is 384 whereas the rank of "hatred" is 841, the rank of "war" is 304 whereas the rank of "peace" is 1155, the rank of "work" is 103 whereas the rank of "holidays" is 3263.

Enjoy!

Pnina

A wonderful source for English teachers Mar 1, 2005

I don't teach English anymore but I always wanted access to this information when I did, as it is a good guide to save students from memorizing words they would have little use for.

Thanks, and I am forwarding this on to all my English teaching friends
